A UNC Chapel Hill Medical School Graduation Session with Dhuru
Celebrating a New Chapter: Dhuru’s UNC Chapel Hill Medical School
Graduation is always worth celebrating, but some milestones carry an especially meaningful sense of accomplishment. After years of studying, long hours, dedication, and hard work, graduating from medical school represents the beginning of an entirely new chapter.
This spring, I had the pleasure of photographing Dhuru, who was graduating from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. From the moment we connected, it was clear that this was going to be a great session. Dhuru was incredibly easy to work with, relaxed in front of the camera, and brought a great personality to the session.
As a Raleigh and Chapel Hill graduation photographer, these are the kinds of sessions I love because they allow me to do more than simply take photographs. I get to help someone document an important moment in their life and create images that represent both where they are now and where they are headed next.
From Medical Student to Physician
For Dhuru, this graduation session marked the end of his journey as a medical student at UNC Chapel Hill and the beginning of his journey into residency.
During his portrait session, we captured a variety of looks that reflected different sides of his accomplishment. From his traditional graduation attire to his medical school look complete with his stethoscope, the photographs tell a story about the work that brought him to this point.
One of my favorite things about graduation photography is incorporating details that make the session personal. Graduation portraits don't have to be limited to the traditional cap-and-gown photographs. Your degree, profession, school colors, academic regalia, or other meaningful items can help tell the story of what you've accomplished.
For Dhuru, incorporating his medical attire and stethoscope was especially fitting. These details helped create portraits that weren't simply "graduation pictures" but photographs documenting his transition from medical student to physician.
Graduation Portrait Sessions at UNC Chapel Hill
UNC Chapel Hill provides an incredible backdrop for graduation portraits. The architecture, brick walkways, columns, mature trees, and historic campus locations offer plenty of variety without taking away from the graduate.
For this session, we used several different areas around campus to create a gallery that felt diverse while still maintaining a consistent look.
Some portraits were more traditional and formal, while others were designed to feel relaxed and natural. We photographed Dhuru standing, sitting, smiling, and looking away from the camera. These variations are important because they give graduates a gallery of images rather than a collection of photographs that all look the same.
That's one of the things I emphasize during my graduation sessions: you don't have to be a professional model to have great graduation portraits.
I'll help guide you through posing, positioning, and expressions throughout the session. My goal is to make the process comfortable while creating photographs that look polished, authentic, and natural.
A Great Client Makes a Great Session
Dhuru was genuinely great to work with.
He was easygoing, professional, and willing to try different poses and locations throughout the session. That makes a huge difference when creating a variety of portraits.
Some of the best photographs from a graduation session aren't necessarily the ones where someone is doing a traditional pose. Sometimes it's the simple moments—the natural smile, the confident look away from the camera, or the relaxed portrait between poses—that end up becoming favorites.
My approach to graduation photography is centered around creating that combination of professional portraits and authentic moments.
Whether you're graduating from high school, college, graduate school, or a professional program such as medical school, your portraits should feel like you.
