Finding a New Passion Behind the Lens: Soccer Photography at WakeMed Soccer Park

There are certain photography sessions that remind you why you love having a camera in your hands. For me, one of those experiences happened earlier this summer at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, when I had the opportunity to photograph a match between the NC Courage U-23 and the Charlotte Eagles. I went into the game excited to photograph soccer, but I left with something even more valuable: a new appreciation for just how much I enjoy soccer photography.

As a photographer based in Raleigh, NC, I've photographed a variety of subjects over the years, from portraits and graduation sessions to sports and athletes. But there is something completely different about standing on the sideline with a camera while a soccer match unfolds in front of you. The speed, emotion, physicality, anticipation and unpredictability of the game make every few seconds an opportunity to capture something special.

And honestly, I had a blast!

Photographing Soccer at WakeMed Soccer Park

WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary is one of the area's premier soccer facilities in the area and a familiar destination for soccer players and families throughout the Triangle. The complex hosts everything from professional and collegiate soccer to high school tournaments, youth events and other major competitions. For a sports photographer, it is an incredible place to photograph.

The size of the field, the movement of the players and the atmosphere surrounding the match create so many opportunities for compelling photographs. You never really know what is going to happen next. One moment, a player is calmly controlling the ball in midfield. A few seconds later, they're sprinting toward the goal, battling a defender or making a run into open space. That's what makes soccer photography so much fun.

You aren't simply photographing people standing in a particular place. You're trying to anticipate the action before it happens and position yourself to capture the split second when everything comes together.

Discovering My Love for Soccer Photography

This game between the NC Courage U-23 and Charlotte Eagles really reinforced something I've been discovering over the last few months: I genuinely love photographing soccer. There's a rhythm to photographing the soccer that I really enjoy. I'm constantly watching the play, looking for developing opportunities and trying to predict where the action is going to happen next. I'm looking for the moments that tell the story of the game—not just the obvious goal-scoring opportunities, but also the intensity of a player fighting for possession, the determination on an athlete's face, a perfectly timed challenge or the emotion that comes after a big play.

Those are the photographs that make sports photography exciting to me. I also love the challenge of creating images that feel different from the typical sports snapshots parents might see from the sidelines. My goal is to create professional, true-to-color, editorial-style sports photographs that show athletes as they really are while they're competing. Soccer gives me so many opportunities to do that.

Why I Want to Photograph More Youth Soccer

After photographing this match, I found myself thinking about how much I would love to bring this same approach to youth soccer photography. There are so many talented young athletes playing soccer throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Wake Forest, Durham, Chapel Hill, Morrisville and the greater Triangle area. And behind every one of those players are parents who spend countless hours driving to practices, tournaments and games. Parents aren't just watching a soccer game. They're watching their kids grow. They're watching them become more confident, learn how to work with teammates, overcome mistakes, celebrate successes and develop a passion for something they love. That's something worth documenting. While phone cameras can capture a quick snapshot from the sideline, professional sports photography can tell a completely different story. Having someone dedicated to following the action means parents can receive professional soccer action photos that capture their child's speed, focus, athleticism and personality while they're competing. Those images can become photographs families keep for years.

More Than Just a Game

What I enjoy most about sports photography is that the final photograph is about more than what happened on the field. It's about the story behind the athlete. It's the years of practices that led to this moment. It's the early mornings, weekend tournaments, long car rides and countless hours spent developing their skills. It's the excitement of scoring a goal. It's the frustration of losing a tough match. It's the determination to come back stronger next time. Those are the moments I want to capture. My experience photographing the NC Courage U-23 and Charlotte Eagles at WakeMed Soccer Park reminded me just how much I enjoy being around the game and looking for those moments through my camera. I'm excited to continue growing as a soccer photographer in Raleigh and the greater Triangle area, and I'd love the opportunity to photograph more games, athletes and families.

Whether your child plays recreational soccer, club soccer, travel soccer or high school soccer, I'd love to help you preserve those moments with professional sports action photography.
